BLOG 2005 Oct 28
Okay, so if you've been keeping track, you know that Hurricane Wilma struck South Florida around 4am EST Monday. I went out to get pics later that day and posted a few of them in my first hurricane blog. Tuesday, I went out again and posted more pics in my Day 2 blog.
Wednesday, I went to my office and nowhere else because my truck was almost on empty. My office actually had power, probably because there is a hospital 2 blocks away. I spent the night at the office, on the floor, resting on top of my sleeping bag and a pillow. Thursday, I went out looking for gas and I took a few more pics. I waited in line for about 3 hours and pushed my truck along by hand so I wouldn't run out of gas. (photo below) When I finally got to the pump, I was only allowed to have $20 of gas, which basically gave me a quarter of a tank.
Today, Friday, I went out looking for gas again. I drove really slow so I would use the least amount of fuel. I saw lines that stretched for what looked like a mile. I finally found a station that had only opened recently and the line was only 4 or 5 blocks long. (photo below) I waited in this line for about 2 hours, once again pushing my truck the entire way. I was only allowed another $20 of gas, so now I had half a tank. The last photo in this set is a closeup of my truck as I waited in line. A black bird (a raven??) landed on the roof of my truck as I was taking the shot of the gas line. I saw a few of these birds fly past but only one of them landed on a vehicle and it happened to be my truck. If you are familiar with my Edgar Allan Poe site, www.PoeStories.com, you'll understand the irony.
Once I had enough gas to leave Florida, I went on a road trip. I had power at the office but no internet and no phone. I had dialup at home but no power and food was scarce. Halloween was in 3 days so I decided to visit the Edgar Allan Poe Museum in Richmond and Poe's grave in Baltimore.
